WHAT'S A GIG??

A GIG is a sociable getogether of members of the internet boating community (which includes non-boaters, which is why there are camping and caravanning facilities - some people also stay on local B&B's) for a weekend. The weekend starts on Friday, when people arrive and get to know each other.

The programme (such as it is) is laid out in advance, and can include all or some of the following:

A Bar!!! (usually with a selection of real ales - has been known to be on limited supplies by Sunday night!)

Afternoon tea (or morning coffee) with cakes

Specially laid-on entertainment (usually Saturday night) - has often been traditional / folk / roots music but has featured a danse (to French music) in the past.

A cruise

An Auction (usually Sunday morning) - proceeds going to the nominated waterways Charity for the weekend

Two quizzes - a "fun" quiz of general knowledge staged one evening and "The Anorak's Quiz" for waterways enthusiasts which runs over the weekend - people with good on-board libraries and Internet access tend to do well in this

A barbeque

A Takeaway - either Indian or Chinese - taken on Sunday night

An "Open Mike" session for those who want to sing or play.

This years GIG will be held at the Soar Boating Club which is HERE on 21st - 23rd August, 2009
